In this hands-on, one day workshop, dive into the process of cyanotype printing with Katama Murray of Teach Peace Prints. This outdoor workshop will focus on how to create prints on watercolor paper using foraged plants with the power of the sun. Cyanotype printing is an amalgamation of photography and printmaking that commonly yields cyan-blue prints, also referred to as blueprints. This process yields different results each time, and is a great opportunity to let go while collaborating with nature. Create beautiful, one of a kind prints that can be admired forever, while taking time to slow down and appreciate the richness and diversity of plant life dwelling alongside us. You’ll also be able to browse the Naturalist’s Notebook’s collection of books and information about the history of cyanotype, focusing on the work of Anna Atkins, a 19th century botanist and phycologist who is considered the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images.
IMPORTANT! - Outdoor cyanotype printing requires sunny weather. Because of this, and the fact that weather in Maine can sometimes be unreliable (even in the summer!), there is a back up plan. If the weather turns out to be cloudy and/or rainy, you will have the opportunity to learn the basics of natural dyeing with foraged plants and food compost. The duration and price of the workshop will remain the same. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. The focus of this workshop, whether cyanotype or natural dyeing, will be determined closer to the event. The weather forecast will be checked continually in preparation, and I will notify participants in advance as soon as possible so you are prepared!
Additional details such as parking suggestions and materials to bring will be emailed to you upon registration.
