Colored Pencil Workshop: Drawing a Blackburnian Warbler

  • The Naturalist's Notebook 16 Main Street Seal Harbor, ME 04605 U.S. (map)

Join us to learn colored pencil techniques and draw a Blackburnian Warbler. This flame-colored species can often be found high in the tops of coniferous trees during the warmer months on Mount Desert Island. Drawing provides a wonderful opportunity to develop your observation skills and further appreciate the beauty of birds. Artist and environmental educator, Anna Stunkel, will be joining The Naturalist’s Notebook remotely to lead a guided drawing workshop. You can view the live, virtual workshop remotely on your device from the comfort of your own home, or join The Naturalist’s Notebook manager Jordan Chalfant at the shop, where we’ll have space to draw and a screen set up so we can follow along with Anna.

Anna Stunkel is a College of the Atlantic alumna now working as an environmental educator at Baltimore Woods Nature Center in New York. She knows more about birds than anyone Jordan has ever met. She is also an accomplished artist and leads draw-along virtual art classes through her website. Learn more HERE.

And check out the beautiful illustrated guide to birds of Mount Desert Island that Anna created when she was a student 11 years ago (free and in full!).

Registration fee: $10

Sign up online HERE.

Once you register, we will email you a PDF of the blackburnian reference image and provide a link so you can join the class, which will be held on Zoom. If you've managed to avoid the world of Zoom over the pandemic, make sure you download the free app before the workshop by clicking HERE.

Suggested materials, all available at The Naturalist’s Notebook and shipped by request, include:

- a regular no. 2 pencil or graphite pencil with eraser

- pencil sharpener

- 9x12" or similar-sized Bristol or sketching paper

- colored pencils. Anna recommends Prismacolor or Faber Castell Polychromos brands. We'll be using yellows, oranges, grays, black, white, dark brown, and indigo.

- If possible, please color print the provided photo or refer to it on a second device during the class. If you aren’t able to do this don’t worry; you can still follow along while Anna draws, and Jordan will have copies at the shop.
